7 ways to validate a product idea in 30 minutes (before wasting supplier time)

Quick checks that separate winners from tire fires. Run these before importing anything to your store.

You've found a product trending on TikTok. It's got viral potential written all over it. But you've been burned before—you imported something that looked perfect and then watched it sit in your store for three weeks while your budget bled out.

So before you hit import, spend 30 minutes validating. It's way cheaper than the alternative.

Check 1: Is this trend actually accelerating?

Pull the TikTok trending page and check how old the top videos are. If the newest one is two weeks old, you're late. The velocity matters more than the raw view count.

Look at the comment timestamps on the top video. If most comments are from 5+ days ago, momentum is already shifting. If the comments are from today, you've got runway.

Search the product name in Google Trends. Does the graph go up, flat, or down over the last 14 days? You want up. If it's flat or declining, the trend is already cooling.

Time spent: 3 minutes.

Check 2: Can you actually source it profitably?

Open OmniDrop and search the product across your supplier network. Look at shipped cost to your target market, not the base price. Shipping matters.

If the product is $8 wholesale + $6 shipping and you need 40% margin to break even on ads, your retail price is at least $22. Now check: are similar products selling on TikTok Shop for $18? If yes, you're underwater before you start.

Margin math is non-negotiable. A viral product that doesn't hit your floor is just expensive inventory.

Time spent: 5 minutes.

Check 3: Is the supplier actually solvent?

Look at the supplier's order fulfillment times (not just their promise—their actual track record). If they're running 21+ days on everything, any viral spike will crush you. You'll be out of stock on day three while orders pile up.

Check their return rate if available. Anything over 5% suggests quality or description problems. Viral traffic doesn't forgive bad reviews.

Time spent: 4 minutes.

Check 4: Does the product description match reality?

Go find a real review of this product from someone who actually bought it. Amazon reviews, AliExpress feedback, Reddit—anywhere that has verified buyers. What are people actually saying?

If the reviews say "took 45 days to arrive" and "smaller than expected," that's not a detail you can overcome with a good product page. That's a customer service problem waiting to happen.

Time spent: 5 minutes.

Check 5: How saturated is the market right now?

TikTok Shop search for the product. Count how many sellers are already running it. If there are 20+ sellers with good reviews, the arbitrage window is already closing. You're competing on price, not novelty.

Instagram Reels—same thing. How many people are selling this exact product with UGC-style ads right now?

If this product has 2–3 active sellers, you've got a shot. If it's 10+, you're fighting a price war.

Time spent: 5 minutes.

Check 6: Is the ad angle defensible?

Look at how the top creators are positioning this product. What's the hook? "Finally, a solution to [problem]" or "This blew my mind" or "POV: you've been doing this wrong"?

Can you actually own that angle, or are you just copying what's already working? Viral niches fill up fast because the first three sellers already own the best messaging.

Time spent: 4 minutes.

Check 7: What's your actual timeline to profitability?

Map the numbers. Assume 3–5% of viewers click. Assume 2–3% of clicks convert. Assume 40% of orders ship without issues (returns, refunds, chargebacks). What does the math look like on a $500 ad spend?

If you need $2K in ad spend to hit breakeven, do you have $5K set aside for this test? Because breakeven never comes on the first shot.

Time spent: 4 minutes.

The pattern

Most products fail not because the trend wasn't real, but because the unit economics don't work or the market's already crowded. Spend 30 minutes validating before you spend $500 testing.

The best dropshippers I know run these checks mechanically. It becomes muscle memory. Trend pops, validation takes half an hour, then you decide: build or move on.

Move fast on the right things. Everything else is just noise.

Next step: set up automated supplier alerts so when a product ships fast and maintains quality, you catch it before the crowd does. That's when real margins exist.

Stop patching the gap with freelancers.
